En el siguiente video Feynman explica en forma brillante su visión del método científico y sobre la construcción de una nueva teoría. Alcanza ver el primer minuto. Feynman dice que la búsqueda de una nueva ley comienza “adivinandola” (“first, we guess it“). Luego se derivan consecuencias y predicciones a partir de esa ley “adivinada”, y se verifican las predicciones con experimentos. Y a continuación Feynman es categórico: “If it disagrees with experiment, it’s wrong. And that simple statement is the key to science. It doesn’t make a difference how beautiful your guess is, it doesn’t make a difference how smart you are, or who made the guess or what his name is, if it disagrees with experiment… it’s wrong.”. La entrevista que mencioné en clase en la que Feynman habla sobre como sabe que algo está bien o mal en base a la observación de la naturaleza, pueden encontrarla en el siguiente link (está disponible el audio y una transcripción). A una de las preguntas sobre como sabía que un resultado era incorrecto, Feynman responde: “I can’t explain it to you. It just seems to me it was wrong, it was clearly wrong. See, I’d already got the idea of what I look at, what I see. That was certainly brought in from my father directly — that things I see, the things that are seen, or the things that even are not seen, but if you look at it very carefully — that that’s the way to know what’s right, and that many people have said things, without looking, that were wrong, because they didn’t look. That aspect was vital, of course, to science.”
